Lent.2–Engage: Worship

by admin on April 7, 2014

Reflections for 16 March 2014
Romans 12:1-3; Revelation 4

(Today is Purim)

What does “worship” bring to mind? How did Jesus redefine it away from obligation to joy? Away from seasonal and timeless? Away from event to posture of living? Attitude launch pad.

Engage: Worship shifts the focus of attention onto God.

“Dallas Willard: “We engage ourselves with, dwell upon, and express the greatness, beauty and goodness of God.”

Eugene Peterson: “Christians don’t simply learn or study or use Scripture; we assimilate it, take it into our lives in such a way that it gets metabolized into acts of love, cups of cold water, missions into all the world, healing and evangelism and justice in Jesus’ name, hands raised in adoration of the Father, feet washed in company with the Son.”

George Lindbeck: to become a Christian involves learning the story of Jesus well enough to interpret and experience your world and yourself in its terms.

Revelation 4
Overview: Greek theatre scene…..stage skene; proskene; with chorus repeats important parts. . John the evangelist is the audience. He uses already well known cultural icons to surpass their credibility and establish Jesus as Lord of lords.

Worship: What?
Chapter 4 changes scene of book from earth to heaven where the rest of the book takes place. God will establish justice on the earth from his throne in heaven. Here Yahweh is enthroned over the entire universe. Faith is him is at the core of believing and following.

Vv1-2⇒ Come up here…..in the spirit. Vision/trance.
Vv3-4⇒ Throne, rainbow, emerald, 24 thrones and elders. (12=tribes; 12=apostles)
Vv5-6⇒ Physical signs of theophany.
Vv6b-8a⇒ Four living creatures: Lion/St. Mark; Ox/St. Luke; Human/St. John; Eagle/St. Matthew. Six wings= cherubim guarding the ark of the covenant.
Vv8b-11⇒Liturgy of the creatures and elders. Chorus appears for the first time.

Worship: So What?

1. God is the center. His word, his will, his way of life.
Word: you are my people.
Will: be a light to the nations.
Way: Forgiveness, compassion, reconciliation. Counter intuitive moves that transform culture.

2 Importance of repetition. Chorus underscores and repeats the essentials. What is essential? Worthy is the lamb. Axios. What are the essentials of worship worth repeating? How does this get lived out in the body? (Romans 12)

3 Living on earth, but seeing eternity. There’s more than meets the eye. How do you have such a vision? How does it inform your world?

Worship: Now What?
